I have been basically trouble free with the scanner.
There was one episode that was strange. The scanner went on and stayed on with the light on! I was not engaging it but the scanner went on by itself. Luckily I was on webtv at the time and pulled the power connector and plugged it back in to reset it.
Overall, it does its job adequately and has no competition.

Let me know something. My unit is just sitting here, collecting dust, waiting for word from HP or webtv as to whether or not to use the scanner.??

Scanner problems?Scammer problems is more like it.I never went for the Scam of a scanner that scans a 4x6" picture for a hundred bucks. While Wal-Mart has a scanner that looks like a 9x12" for $69.00 for a PC.
I know three users personally that own WEBTV and all three went for the scam and all three had problems.Even a 5 year old knows that is more then 1%.One of the users didn't even know that the problem was with the scammer until I told her it wasn't her WEBTV.
They are insulting our intelligence to say they tested this appliance.Could it have been greed with wanting to be the first to have a WEBTV scammer before some other company would come up with one.To rush the job and put it on the market.Without proper test?
"I THINK SO" Thats my 2 cents.
P.S.I'd like to get a certain fly friend of mine into the corperate office of these people.I'll have to check the delivery schedule.

If your web unit worked fine prior to using the scanner and was listed as compatable then I would think the onus should be on the manufacturer,ie HP, to make restitution.
However, it would benefit the two companies to work together on a solution because:
1) I should hope Webtv wants to keep its users happy
2) there are several million webtv owners and HP would lose most of that market in any future items they produce for our units.
As we all know, it only takes about 2 days for the word to get out to all of us about any snafus, misfunctions and problems as we are a tight knit group and word travels fast in our circle.

I have had the HP e-scanner since Christmas '00. I have never had a problem with it. I don't use it that much but when I have used it, it has worked great. I think people must realize that, there will always be some kind of problem with anything they ever buy. It's just the way things are. If, you bought a HP e-scanner and it isn't working the way it should, then I would just take it back to where you bought it or make the manufacturer replace it. You might have to fight a little to get it replaced but you can get just about anything replaced in this world if you just fight for it. Just a reminder when you want to have something replaced. Do not be rude to the salesperson, just be as nice as you can be. Sometimes things get frustrating but just hang in there and things will turn out your way. Besides, if all else fails and the salesperson won't help you, then just simply go to his supervisor or manager and they'll usually be more than happy to help out a customer who is disatisfied with one of their products.

When I ordered my HP scanner in Nov., no one knew how to hook it up on my dishplayer at WebTB or HP. i spent almost 2 hours, long distance call to HP and no one knew how it worked nor anything about it. A lady at DishNet guessed and it worked. In January, 2 days after its warranty went out, it stopped working. You have to call a 1-900-number at $2.50 PER MINUTE FOR A MAX. OF 10 MINUTES. The tech knew nothing about the e-scanner. Then I called their Wasshington State headquarters and spent about an hour and a half there being transfered around like the flu. I've spent about $40 up to then on being told 'I don't know.'' by HP techs. Half the cost of my scanner.
Icalled a friend with a puter and he said to just umplug it for about 15 minutes so it can ''reset'' itself. Then to re-hook it back up by the instruction book. It worked! Moral of this story....go to a friend that has a scanner or other equipment that you may have on your WebTV and it'll be correct or at least free help.
I have a dishplayer and I follow the e-scanner instruction book every time I hook-up or disconnect my scanner. The on-light will work even tho the scanner may need to be re-set.

replace the units causing the problems.if one percent are bad that could be hundreds if not thousands of unit!

I think it's great ---- if you like things handled like a military secrect. First of all in this day in age a company as big as HP not having a toll free# is beyond me.If it's a belt tightening measure, then try cutting something that doesnt affect the customer. My scanner was a gift from my sister who thought it would be great. Well it would if I wasnt scared to death to use it. HMmmmmm fry my unit? or let it collect dust until hp or webtv get their collective heads out of their backsides, and do the right thing. Oooooo is that a pig flying over!!!!

I have had a HP E-scanner since Xmas 2000 and have had NO problems with it. I have an older Plus model Mitsubishi 2000. It works fine. I keep it disconnected and covered when it's not in use. Just my opinion. The problems may come from faulty connection procedures.

It would seem that HP is operated by the same type`s that run webtv.
Totally dishonest to the core!!
Just like the past(thank god) Clinton administration, They concentrate on PR. It is the old "all talk no action" type of operation that is so infuriating to all.

I would like to suggest an alternative to the HP e-Scanner.
For absolutely free, you can receive Tiff-G3 (fax) pictures in your e-mail and convert them to jpeg or gifs using Image Magick. That's if you have a free account with e-Fax, or a paid account at J2Fax. (Just make sure you have your B & W or color fax machine setting on "photo" or "halftone", depending on the brand. I'm getting beautiful fax pictures from friends who don't have scanners.
And, I'm thinking about upgrading my e-Fax account to "Plus" so I can send e-fax messages from WebTV.
I don't need a scanner or a WebTV Plus to send pictures. The fax machine to e-mail option WORKS!

I just bought a HP Scanner for our webtv plus. It worked for 2 days then stopped.. I called HP Shopping
about this and they are replacing my Scanner..
Now my question is, why are you selling something that wpuld fry our webtv units? I don't get..
Andrea
I have contacted both HP & Webtv
asking only that they provide advice on hooking the scanner to my "old" plus. I will not waste your time with the various attempts but will say that after several weeks
Of being told Engineers will contact me,etc. I still haven't got a clue.
If I was considering a purchase in the future do you think I would first consider HP ?? Hmmmm??
Howard Tomlinson
This is HP related, not necessarily scanner only. With the nightmare I had with the 670TV printer I have been telling everyone I know DO NOT buy anything HP. They do not stand by their products unless you want to make a $25.00 phone call. Sorry 'bout the OT- just venting. Live in Peace
Jon
HP and WebTV should keep us informed as to how the problem is being handled, and what (if anything) is being done to resolve it, as well as how long it will take to get an answer.
As a MAT972 owner, I am very frustrated, as I dearly would love to have an e-scanner but have been impatiently waiting for a definite answer.

Why tell the truth, when a LIE will not only do, but be SUCKED up by the majority of webtv owners / users, like ice cream, without question.
Russell Kawel
Neither of these companies care a fig about their customers.
It is a sign of the times that this attitude is all too common, especially in the world of computers and the internet.

I won't buy one because, aside from the problems stated,it's too expensive for a dedicated webtv scanner, and all you can scann is a 4x6 photo. computer scanners come in a variety of prices and uses, some much less expensive and scann a full page.

I must be one of the 99% wh have not had a problem with the HP e-Scanner. I love it !
auntcharincalif
I have just finished dealing with HP customer service...so I can tell you first hand, they are just amazing... I asked for the location of the headquarters of HP and got "California, I think" me: where, her" I don't know. Thanks for calling. Me: hey, where in calif, her: why? Me: I want to contact them. her: I don't know Me: can you ask someone? her: well, ok, (sounding po'd) and awhile later, reported back Palo Alto.
It was about my scanner, and it was like meeting a brick wall. I was horrified to find a lousy little 4x6 size scanner, and about printers to go with it. That was not customer service that any person of influence or prestige would put up with. Are we the equivelant of cb people?? They were arrogant, uninformed, ignorant, and aggravating. SERVICE??? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!

I think that HP and WEBTV should come forward and clear the air about the problem. The longer they let it go the more suspicions are aroused and the more mistrust grows.

If HP counts customer complaints like WebTV counts customer complaints, be assured far too many people have experienced problems for the two companies to have ignored the problems.
As a DishPlayer owner, I maintain a healthy dose of skepticism when WebTV is involved in _any_ venture with another company and I'm grateful I held off in purchasing the scanner - no small feat for a gadget junkie like me.
I know there are multitudes out there who haven't experienced problems as of yet, but for the many who are the proud owners of fried WebTV units and useless video outlets, this is not a negligable problem. I find the attitudes of WebTV and HP unconscionable. To ignore the problems connected with a product that was so hyped for the Christmas season and to leave these customers literally 'holding the bag' is unethical, but business as usual for WebTV.
It comes down to one thing, translatable in any language--- GREED! If we ignore the problem, tout the product and simply claim there is no problem, we can make as much money as possible before the customers rise up and we have to pull the plug.
To those who have been burned with fried units and useless scanners, I feel for you. Yet another group of disenfranchised folks ignored by WebTV. I expected better from a company like HP. Shame on them both.
Carol Baker
If HP had simply made this e-scanner with battery power, there would less problems. It's 'pass-the-buck' when it comes to WNI, and especially philips Magnavox in regards to Webtv. I know from experience. When we were able to first do Vid-Caps I fried the video turner by using power from an outlet on my video camera while using it for wtv vid-caps. BIG MISTAKE! Made a bigger one by getting WNI &/or PM to pay or replace my unit. Neither would take responsibility. A $200 mistake. But since I use the rechargable battery with my video camera, no problem. The stupid e-scanner is just a video eye with cheap lighting in a plastic box. You could use a video camera - the new ones with a big screen instead of a eye lens - and simply put a large flashlight and some thin small boards painted white around the camera and use one white, board a certain distance away, facing the camera's lens, use focus, and paste / tape the photo, painting, what-have-you, to this board and take a VC. I've seen the results of this, so called e-scanner, and frankly my homemade set-up works far better.
Martin Jones
They need to resolve the problems and let us know how and what is resolved before I purchase a HP eScanner. If a unit is fried HP need to replace the unit.

I believe this is predictable behavior from Webtv and HP. While certainly not on the scale of the Firestone fiasco, it is a definite trend which has been going on for some time: DENY, DENY, DENY. Those companies just don't think they'll be hurt by a few unhappy customers -- that it will "blow over" if they just sit tight - and yes, DENY.
Kay
why don't they just make a voltage resticker that plugs in to the older plus units before plugging the e-scanner in. what's the big deal. they could include the restrictor when you buy the e-scanner .
Albert Dona Jr.
I feel like it is a good idea but if they cant deliver than they should discontinue the service, because people are paying good money for a product that they are not providing for.
Jeff Lomicky
HP should fix the problem they caused.
What should webtv do? like they always do Nothing....
Bernie
I have a replacement e-scanner sitting here that HP sent me but am afraid to hook it up. I now have one Webtv unit sitting here with no video signal, and don't want to hook it to my new unit till they come up with a solution. In other words, one webtv unit and one e-scanner sitting here, and no one is doing anything about it.
Cecil Gress
They let me return the e-scanner as it would not function with my new plus unit. I sure could use the scanner but it just won't scan?
Tom Zakula
All I can tell you is my own experience with my scanner. I bought it from HP and have used it for several months now. I have scanned maybe 50 to 60 pictures and the scanner has worked just great. I have had no problems using it and am very pleased by it's performance.
Frank
If I could find a company that was up front and open with me and simply kept me informed of what was going on, (good or bad) they would have a VERY loyal customer indeed. Comunications with their customers is very importand and is something that is lacking with WebTV. The E-scanner is not their product but it does concern the use of their product and they should tell us what is going on, not simply remain silent and let us guess.
Andrew Cummins
what's to think about? neither HP nor WebTV handled the situation with distinction. your question left out the OEM's who manufacture the set-up appliances. they, Phillips, in particular, have not distinguished themselves @ all. WebTV fumbled, HP punted, & OEM,s didn,t even get off the bench!!!
there is the high probability that the scanner is not the culprit in this triage; but merely, i add somewhat jocularly, the input device that exposed the vulnerability of 'underdesigned' circuitry in the TV tuner components..check for so-called engineering changes, masquerading as product cost reductions in the receivers. my bet is that is where the enigma resides.
after leaping over the formidable defenses of so-called customer support personnel, i was able to penetrate into the higher echelons of HP, and achieved a somewhat phyric satisfaction. HP re-imbursed me for the damaged IR unit & all the comensurate expenditures i underwent in this quagmire to the tune of $562.31, which included long distance telcalls, printing, copying costs, gas mileage to Office Max, etc. et al.i assessed them for some value of my labor costs which they didn't buy into. i forwarded to the CEO's of Phillips,HP, WebTV, including William Gates [not kidding] a bundle of data derived from newsgroups as well as your[net4TV] reportage on the subject.
the problem is not the electronic failure of the receiver when highly concentrated optico-digital data is transmitted by the HP e-scanner to the TV tuner circuit. the problem is the total lack of any inter-organizational co-ordination or in-charge accountable/responsible agency/agent to pick up the ball and take charge of assembling the technical and communicative aspects of a multi-corporation failure situation. quality assurance & reliability as well as consumer real time testing is/was non-existent prior to product design, introduction and subsequent customer delivery phases. needless to conclude in brief, USA is better than this reckless abandonment of long established practices, and the competitive race to get products into the marketplace exacerbates the 'so-what' attitude of bean counters concerned more with short term profits than longer range reputations that accrue to reliable producers. the e-scanner/WebTV business is but a dot on the ocean of corporate revenues of microsoft,HP, & various other OEM's [Sony bailed out]. BUT the symptoms point towards an alarming trend that is no doubt reflected in the balloon puncturing of the hyper-inflated .com industry. enuff said! over & out! signing off!

I FEEL BECAUSE WEBTV PROMOTES USING THE HP/ESCANNER AND ALSO BELONGING TO HP...BOTH COMPANIES SHOULD BE TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING A NEW WEBTV SYSTEM..
I OWN A HP ESCANNER, AND IF MY WEBBY BRAKES, FOR SURE THEY WILL HEAR FROM ME..
