In November of 1998, my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease. When I opted to keep her at home instead of placing her in a nursing home, my company reneged on their promise of part time work and telecommuting and fired me.
Literally captive and alone with a dementia patient, I no longer had access to a computer, but I stretched the budget enough to get a reconditioned WebTV box. Using the little box, I earned enough through on-line surveys and occasional mystery shopping to pay for the WebTV.
The internet also led me to an outstanding support group of some 800 Alzheimer caregivers and professionals. Through their experience, skill, and compassionate support,I was able to keep Mom at home until she died 8 weeks ago.
Without the support of people I met on line, I wouldn't have made it. And because I did see this through, all of my values have changed. I have a degree in Business Administration, but had previously studied social work. Now I'm going back to finish the social work degree, and look forward to a more meaningful life in the field of elder advocacy.
All because of that little WebTV box!
