I don't think I would. I enjoy my LBB, even with the service and
technical problems that come with it...but to pay additional fees by the
hour (or the month) to individual sites is ridiculous.
The sites which provide what the users really want (whatever it is) will
survive by drawing in great numbers of users and that's what the
advertisers are looking for. They will pay to advertise on the most
popular sites. Those sites will survive and prosper...as long as the
users are happy with the site and continue to visit.
Look at the top-rated network TV programs....the more viewers they have,
the more money they can charge their advertisers. If a TV show attracts
a small audience, its advertisers disappear and the show is cancelled.
The viewers of network TV don't pay for the programs directly, the
advertisers do. We buy the advertised goods!
It may be an over-simplification to make a comparison of websites to TV
programs, but doesn't the basic principle hold up?
Websites charge advertisers according to the numbers of visitors that
will see the ads. Advertisers want their message to be seen by as many
people as possible if the demographics are right. Websites who supply
the users with first class information ( games, research, etc) will get
the users...and the users will bring the advertisers. Everyone WINS!
Maybe the real problem, and the reason so many sites are going under is
the fact that there are just too many of them trying to provide the same
material. Naturally, the ones that appeal to the most users will
win....the others will (and have) fall to the wayside. It's called
CAPITALISM.... and it's the way business works!
So....NO! I would not be interested in paying a fee. Advertisers will be
more than happy to do it for me, and I think that's THE answer.
