My site was deleted and I did not get a notice about terms
of service violation. I cannot imagine how I could have violated the
terms of service. I have written asking about this and not received a
reply.
I was distressed to learn that a long term Webtv user whose web site
about MS is one of the best I know of had her site deleted. She is a
lady with MS who you wrote up a couple of years ago and was able to the
site together with the use of only one arm.
I apprecite your paying attention to this and hope the problem can be
resolved. I really lost a lot when my site went.

I had just a few background images from Draac's on my E-mail page, no
website, and now I canot get any of the ones I had to work,,,,,.... If
Draac's, and tripod doesn't wish me, a webtv user, to use any of the
backgrounds, or "gif's" , then why didn't they just e-mail me and say
so..
I miss my e-mail background, and alien gif. I haven't a clue where to go
now and try to find , or rather put togther a new background ...

I just wanted to point out to you and the many ppl complaining it was NOT ONLY webtv users who were "targeted". I am a pc user and have been for MONTHS before I moved my site to tripod. I used go.com while on webtv but as u may know they decided to longer host homepages.
I have also been in contact with others who have lost their sites and they are NOT webtv users nor were their pages geared towards webtv. My site is not "geared" towards webtv users but it is webtv friendly and I check to make sure by using the "webtv viewer".
On a better, personal note my tripod site Becky's Funny Page has been restored, but, I have moved it because I don't like that whatever the problem was even happened.

It wasn't just WebTV users, it was a wholesale deletion of pages.....no
ryhme or reasoning to it, it seems. My 65 specifically related to
powwows pages were all deleted, along with another 4 under the same
"name".
Many other native related sites were deleted as well and many were
asking if it was race related. I know of Tripod sending one webpage
builder an apology but his page(s) are not back up. My pages are all
back up but there has been no word from Tripod.
Thank you for sharing this story. I've passed it along to many activist

It should be back by tomorrow night, or earlier. We spoke with Tripod
yesterday, and then again today. It was a mistake in a script that made
the sites disappear, and they're restoring them now. Let us know on
Thursday, if it wasn't restored.

to webtv user & when a computer user viewed them all they got was "JAVA
Errors" i don't think i voilated thier terms either,, I sent many emails
to all the addy i could find to get help or explaintion but NEVER ONE
REPLY came back ,,Other webtv user are now haveing the same problem of
lost pages oe just deleted,,

I am soooo relieved my site is back on line as of this AM. The poultry
folks were devastated and have been very helpful. I've received many
mails asking what they can do to help. They are a wonderful group of
folks like the webtv community whom take care of their own. One of the
largest and most popular poultry site webmasters is putting my site on
his server for back up as I write. I'll need not fear loss again. What a
weight off my shoulders.
Thank God for net4tv it's a great place !! I stopped reading the NG's
as they are full of rumors. Net4 is where I go if I want the "real"
scoop.

I think what Tripod has done is unconscionable...If they wanted to clean
house and get rid of webtv users or even "violaters" as they
claim...then fine but just out of courtesy for all of the many loyal
people who put their trust in them ...they should have given these
alleged "violaters" a few days "grace" to allow them to move their
"work" to another server...and I do mean work...these sites. which just
represent trivial accounts to Tripod.. represent months even years of
work to these people...and just because Tripod had the "right" to delete
peoples work. ..does not make it the "right" thing to do.....In this
life there are right ways to do things and wrong ways to do things...and
I truly believe what goes around comes around......and even if they
didn't say to themselves "omg how can we do this to al these people who
trusted us" then they should have said "what will happen to us
financially if we alienate all the webtv users and what if each webtv
user has 3 or 4 or more computer friends who will also be mad about what
we have done to their friends?" ...I think in the long run...Tripod will
pay dearly for what they have done.....and I personally hope they go
under.....My heart goes out to all of the people who lost their
sites....

My site's files were lost over 2 yrs ago
i found my frozen files and even told tripod where they were and nothing
was done --i have started to rebuild 2 times
and my files were taken down again-
tripod has offered no reason for this
except they were lost --and now i have empty files once again--

there are still other free webhosts out there.. paying for webspace
isn't an option for me ~like many others~ 9ug.com is webtv friendly and
gives 100MB of space too... although for right now their sign up page
isn't available.. TerraShare has become the quick solution since your
site can be copied within minutes (with one click).. the only drawback
there is they need your home address since they pay you for your hits..
I myself am at worldzone and they are 100MB of free space ... the only
drawback there is so many are running there and it's busy.... I hear the
TheGlobe can be an option for us but don't know of it personally...
I don't expect a reply ..I was just offering a little help.. I let
people know in a couple newsgroups that paying for webspace wasn't an
option for me (I'm not ashamed of it) ... but many are apparently.. I
got flooded with emails asking for help and that they are in the same
boat.. but out on post no one uttered a word... I know you people will
get the word out to other webtvers... NOT that I want all kinds of email

I hope they (Tripod) gets this straightened out. I have a Tripod site;
it takes years off your life to see your work down the drain, without
warning, no indication, nothing.

I am really sick of life on the edge due to
the flair ups etc of a "free" server. For, there is no free lunch.
Frankly, I have webpage burnout. I'd spent many hrs working on my site
for over a wk, as this
is very time consuming. Only to login to
see that my site was gone. I am pretty
disenchanted. I really don't know if I will
continue my work on it over there anymore, I have webpage frazzled
nerves and disappointment burn out.

I got hit by Tripod on Saturday, 3/17. This is the second time Tripod
has stuck it to me. One day last July, I was working on one of my
Tripod accounts, editing files and deleting others that I no longer had
a need for. When I accessed the account the next day to finish up, I
found that every file in the account, some 9MBs worth, had been deleted,
some of them very personal and irretrievable. When I questioned Tripod
as to why (a follow-up was necessary before I got an answer), their
response was "Your account is active". I told them I knew it was
active, but demanded to know why all the files had been deleted.
Needless to say, I never got an explanation, let alone the courtesy of a
reply. That's when I joined the WTV-Zone. Best move I ever made.
Unfortunately, I should have learned my lesson then, and closed out the
rest of my accounts. At least the account that was just cancelled
wasn't that important and isn't that great a loss, but it's the
principal of the thing. But rest assured, even if Tripod restores the
accounts, once I get everything moved to the Zone, I'm going to tell
Tripod, in no uncertain terms, what they can do with their "free" Web
Hosting service, and their banner ads.
BTW for those that don't know, Tripod/Lycos' parent organization is
Carnegie-Mellon University. Carnegie-Mellon is one of the wealthiest
charitable foundations in the world.
"Charity". They don't know the meaning of the word.

Allot of angryness is being aimed at tripod I had a site that i don't
use anymore (thankfully) that was effected, so I went to tripod and
logged in and this is what I recieved:

PICKING OUR BONES FIRST?????? Before Lycos partnered
with tripod,tripod was great. easy navigation,etc.etc. very polite to
webtvers. etc.rules were transload to your own server. most webtvers
did. tripod supplied the wonderful alphabetically automatic directory.
members would then use their transloaded gifs and midi's to their
webpages and sigs for e-mail.feeling good that they did not break the
rule of using someones bandwidth........ now last week not only the
transloaded in my name from my tripod directory graphics that were on my
webpages and sig box. were removed. webpages are left with squares
instead of graphics. webrings have been emptied of graphics that have
been transloaded to our own directory for use.awards that have been
transloaded to our own directories have vanished also. leaving webpages
looking picked over and picked on.and eventually will be terminated. at
the rate they leave your pages picked over like that there is not much
left to delete. Its quite a devastating move on their part,to all what
made webtv so wonderful. I also had a return mai the other day that
described my MIME as 1.0 WOW!!! quite a jump from 2.5 and i thought we
would at least be 3.0 with new update. also my printer which is web
compatible about 9 months old. has been crazy for the last 2 months.
what is going on here. first they tell me its not working NO DRIVER!!!
then they decide to let it work for you and if you a copying a 1 pager,
they set it up 4 pages or 6. half way through the printing process they
quit. can't just print the last half of your project so try attempting
to print it all again.surprize.it says jammed. what else is new. you
check it all out. stop the printing process. turn it off and back on and
it throws you a great sheet telling you what make your printer is blah
blah blah. in perfect printing color and precision. printed in 1 min
flat. this is immediately following CHECK FOR JAMMED PAPER,MAKE SURE
YOUR PRINTER IS ON!Helloooooo!!! this printer was and probably still is
one of the best to use with webtv.are we being driven from webtv . i
paid a price for ancestry.com I go in at night it serves less
interruptions household wise. last two months i get in and log in and at
4 in the morning i get a reconnect because of a supposed phone call. now
you have to log in all over again different page for that. and lose all
those ancestors you just found.BAD TIMING!!! and no real phone call
either.I also worked on my webpages at tripod in the middle of the
night.log in, and get half way through html coding and your whole t.v.
goes off.beautiful!!!!! LOL.one thing on your mind then get back there,
log in, get to your page and SAVE if you can.Its like somebody out there
is having fun but it sure isn't you.I would like to know how paying
money for a host to have some space would elliminate these little quirks
that happen.hmmmmmmmmm.help me to believe this ....please.

I came to net4 to ask for your help. I thought I was the only one whom
tripod deleted. I am at a loss !!! I have thousands of hours 4 years of
work in my QuackersHomePage at tripod. Many waterfowl keepers count on
me for help in raising their waterfowl, how to incubate, candle their
eggs, selling on and on. Folks from all over the world have helped me
build this site IT'S ALL GONE !!! I have written tripod @ abuse with no
reply. The poultry community will help in my cause... who do I write ?

Tripod did not single out webtv users! I am a computer users and so are many
of the people who lost their accounts. And FYI....I did contact Tripod today
and was told it was an error on their part and they are working to restore
some 1500 accounts. They offered no apology only that we would all have our
accounts back within 48 hours.

I have a website on Tripod, or well I did have one on there, until this weekend. I am not on Web tv, at all. I have a PC that I use. I have had problems since January with getting onto my website to do any editing. I had written to Tripod many times about the so-called Temporary Interruption notice. They may write back in their own time, just a form letter , of course. I had been out of town for the weekend, when I returned, I had a letter from a friend letting me know that my Tripod website, along with her 2 Tripod websites had all disappeared. Tripod had deleted them I guess, without notice. I hope to write a letter of complaint to them today, if I can.
Just thought that I would let you know that Tripod is deleting websites, at ramdom it would appear. It is not just Web tv users having their websites deleted. Thank you.

Just wanted to correct some thngs in your article ... grin!
A lot of my friends in my particular hobby ... fans of Roger Howarth and
his character Todd ... have also been deleted ... and they are not
WebTV'ers, but computer users.
None of them received warning ... their sites just disappeared.
Rumors ran rampart in the fan communities ... and some reported that
they were told they violated the TOS because of Fan Fiction, Fan Art and
"pornography", illegal linking or copyright violations ... but who
knows.
The site I help run is still up ... but we don't have FF or mag covers
... etc.
Just thought I'd let you know that this is not ALL WebTV directed ...
computer users have been hit too ......

I had two sites on Tripod, both offering free outlook express stationery. I am not on webtv I am in England and am gutted that my sites are down. One site has been inaccessible for some time due to a "temporary fault"....each time I wrote to tripod they insisted they were working on the problem. This time though I no longer have a user name which is recognised and there is the usual block notice. I have emailed Tripod on four occasions over the weekend without the courtesy of an acknowledgement or a reply. I have friends also who have lost their sites, just ordinary housewives who enjoy sharing their art with the world wide web. Tripod? They get the thumbs down from me. I would like to be able to get back into my files to remove my "artwork", what chance do I have of doing that now.....

It may not be just WebTV pages that are being trashed by Tripod.
A message was posted yesterday on a NON-WebTV sci fi show mailing list
warning creators of fanfic or fan-related sites (PC users) that Tripod
is dumping all fan-related sites and sending the owners TOS violations
for copyright infringements!

My account that is signed up with my computer mail addy is GONE.
My account that is signed up with my webtv mail addy....is still there.
I have not yet received a letter from Tripod.

When mentioning the Zone, it would have been nice if you also mentioned
Domania Internet service.
Craig (Prodigal Son) who GAVE us the Freeloaders when the Webtv
Community needed them most (Star Blvd. had started to charge) started
his Domania accts BEFORE the Zone.
$5 a month - unlimited linking - website mover, no ads on your pages,
etc. etc.
Equal time???
Domania is similiar to the Zone.
You can make homepages with NO ads.
You have unlimited linking to your email.
They have an AutoLoader that moves a whole website in minutes.
You have your own, very fast uploader/transloader and much more...
Last but not least, it is run by a genuis, Craig (Prodigal Son) who Gave
the Webtv community the Domania Freeloaders..
I've had my acct. there for over a year and it's great. Use any of the
above. (The genuis part is JMHO!!) LOL!!!

If Tripod wanted to rid itself of WebTVer's, all they need to do is
remove the Homepage Housekeeper, they have the other one for computer
users. They haven't, so that's not it.

IF this is a faulty script or a glitch the deletion of pages can not be
helped and hopefully restoration is possible.
BUT if sites are deleted because of TOS,
so be it. What I can NOT understand is I am a member of USA Drifters.
You had a story about us a while back.
We make state websites for our and hopefully others enjoyment. These
sites go into classrooms and are viewed by many many shut-ins.
These site deletions were very heavy to our group. Hopefully the pieces
can be picked up~

I have to say, this may be more of a widespread phenomenon then you think- I
have been reading and posting in alt.support.diet.low-carb , and one persons
site has been mysteriously deleted. Everyone there thinks its because it was
listed in her signature, and was reported as spam! Funny enough, she could
have been a target, as she has been selected to go to a famous diet doctors
clinic, to represent to the public as a successfull person on his
program....
The thread (with my amusingly torrid submission) can be found under the
title "Getting Tinakaye's Website back for her". With the diet story
website missing, and the webtv'ers sites dissapearing, I'm afraid that it is
more dire then a tripod termination....they may have messed up big time!
