[If you are searching for sound and image files, Starship 2000, aka Norbert, has quite a few for you. He also has animated gifs, backgrounds, slide shows and e-mail signature help.--ck]
Who's the owner of this wonderful site? Let me introduce Norbert. He resides in Providence, Rhode Island. Some of Norbert's hobbies include WebTV, hiking, biking, and walking. Norbert has had his WebTV unit for one year. Before he purchased the little black box, he used the computers in the public library. "I found out about WebTV at Wal-Mart and in March 2000, I purchased a WebTV Classic," Norbert explained. He took it back to the store and exchanged it for a new Classic. Then on October 28, 2000 he upgraded the Classic to a Plus unit.
His first days on WebTV were filled with exploring. He knew some things from the library computers, so he surfed around and discovered news groups. Norbert said, "I started learning about how WebTV had no local storage for image and sound files." Then Norbert had a dream. He decided his goal would be a website where WebTVers could have sound and image files available for linking. He taught himself HTML, starting with practice pages on the WebTV PageBuilder, and also got a few tips from Beth Candy.
Then, back in the late spring or early summer of 2000, Norbert got his linkable midi site up and running, which was featured in Better Homes. He later expanded this and has added a great deal more. "I now have linkable gifs, animated gifs, linkable backsgrounds, slide shows, and e-mail sig help with ccp codes." Plus a page with a funny story about WebTV addicts. Norbert's Main Index Page has convenient pull down menus, for convenient navigation to all of his pages.
Norbert's future plans call for adding more images for e-mail use, and more slide shows of various content. Midis are being added daily by visiting his Request Page, where you can request a particular midi that you would like to have in your e-mail sig.
Norbert likes the fact that the WebTV unit does not take up any room. "It hooks up and uses my existing TV. I can sit comfortably and I don't have to have my eyes on a glaring computer screen." He also likes the user friendly aspect of WebTV as opposed to using a computer.
However, Norbert dislikes the thin client build. "WebTV lacks local storage of any kind. It must depend on the server to be of any value." WebTV does provide some storage on the servers for image files using PageBuilder, but the space is limited. And there is no support for storing any sound files on the PageBuilder, which is another problem that bothers Norbert. He does not like the fact that the current 2.6 upgrade does away with the ability to delete cookies, which is a basic option on a computer. Norbert's ideas for a better WebTV unit include the capability for local storage, more space for PageBuilder, and more browser support, such as keeping up to date with HTML (currently at version 5.0) and a better way of releasing upgrades. "The present system is a lottery nightmare when you don't know and cannot plan a time to receive the upgrade."
So if you are ever in need of graphics or midis for your sig, I strongly suggest stopping by Norbert's site and taking a look around. ~sman
