[Many of you may have seen Anne's Treasure Box as she has 194544 hits on her homepage. Those of you not familiar with this huge site containing 2117 links will find games, educational sources, audioscopes, music, graphics, HTML tutorials, science, discovery, inspiration, archeology, a tour of the states and so, so much more!--ck]
I was touring webpages on the lookout for a great site to write up on and found Annie's which so intrigued me as it contains frivolous and fun sites to the most challenging for our quest for knowledge about the universe, NASA, ancient sites, discovery and more. I just had to share her with you!
Annie lives approximately 40 minutes away from Lake Erie and about a 20-30 minute drive from what she says are "the snow machine effects." She said, "That means my town doesn't get hit as hard as the others, but if I really want to see a lot of snow, I need not drive far. We also have a couple of beautiful ski resorts to retreat to." She believes that she and her husband will stay in this area. She explains, "My husband's ancestors came from Goshen, Connecticut over 200 years ago and settled in Hudson, Ohio. His ancestors were some of the earliest settlers in the 'Western Reserve' area."
I asked her to share something about herself and she only volunteered that she performed quite a variety of work and then decided to devote more time to motherhood after 1992. Well, let me bring you up to date on this lady. She has quite an impressive history and I will list just a sampling of it. She was involved in food preparation, was a cashier/waitress, a professional dancer, a singing telegram messenger, a model/seamstress, a medical transcriber, a wedding planner, a holiday decorator, a genealogist, a legal secretary, a floral designer, was educated in journalism and writes poetry. The list is very long and you can review her job history and education here. "Presently, I am trying to re-familiarize myself with the computer towards the goal of opening the door to new job opportunities."
Of course, I drew some family history from her. The poor men in the family. LOL. She shared, "It has largely been like a testosterone atmosphere for me during the past 26 years, because of mothering 4 sons. To balance this out, I painted my bedroom pink, placed teddies, dolls, feminine paintings, Kim Anderson photos of children and 3-D laced border around my walls. Two daughter-in-laws joined the picture and there's a potential one in waiting now, for which I am thankful." See what I mean? Way to go, Annie!
Oh, she has WebTV to thank for keeping her in touch with the world. "At the suggestion of a friend, I purchased a WebTV Plus 2-1/2 years ago. This was quite needed, as I had become partly disabled due to a couple of circumstances. WebTV helped me to stay in touch with the outside world."
When Annie first came online, she went to chatrooms and was mostly a "lurker." (I think most of us have done this.) "There were some interesting contacts and friends that I made while there, but my attention was soon drawn to building webpages. ADH originally helped me to get going through Tripod. But in a matter of days, I discovered how simple it was to use HTML and pretty much took over from that point. Almost every page I initially found in the WebTV community was like gold to me, so I began what would become an extensive listing of my favorite links. My 'faves' include a variety of subjects like graphics, tool supplies, tips, e-mail supplies, banner generators, alphabets, color charts, printables, videogame FAQS, free stuff on the web, recipes, maps, planets, genealogy, science and more."
Well, see for yourselves. You will be sure to spend an awful lot of time just looking at Annie's Treasure Box! Be sure to explore the educational sites while you are there. One of my favorites was her link to All Things Planetary as you will find not just links to the planets, but links to ancient sites, archeology, discovery sites, the sciences, to ghost towns, NASA, Egypt, a lightening gallery, a tour of the United States and so much more!
Of course, building the webpage was not as simple as one may think when it comes to transloading. "My biggest hurdle was learning to transload at Star Boulevard, and now WebTV users have a larger and more simplistic selection of transloaders to use. Then I discovered ImageMagick, one of my all-time fave places on the web. I've not learned all that it can possibly do, but I've learned enough to have quite a bit of fun playing with the different gizmos there!"
Annie's future plans are to keep her webpage up and going, checking the links twice a year to remove the dead ones. "To me, it's been quite annoying to go to webpages with exhaustive links, just to discover half of them are broken. Should it come to a point that time will not allow me to faithfully add new links and delete broken links, I've already arranged for another well established and well liked person in the WebTV community to take custody of it!" Well, boy howdy, she sure knows how to keep us dangling. LOL. Now we can just all start guessing and probably be wrong about that person's identity. (Annie, it is just human nature to wonder who could this be? Never mind. No answer is required.) However, we would not wish anyone to take over this brilliantly made webpage.
As to her likes and dislikes of WebTV, she said, "After trying out MSN for a few days, I have gained a better appreciation for WebTV. I do wish things could be stored on a memory card at home, like maybe where the smart card is to go, but as of yet, the slot on the box seems to not be serving any purpose."
In closing, she had some nice comments to add. "I look forward to receiving each issue of Net4TV's Voice and believe it is well organized and maintained by some very bright, kind, and hard-working people."
