The PSX2 Has Landed!

By James Waters
(October 26, 2000)

Sony released its next generation video game system today, the PlayStation 2 (PSX2). With its multifaceted capabilities and impressive list of launch titles, the PSX2 is poised to create gaming history with what may possibly be the most successful console launch in history.

Sony's first console, the PlayStation has sold in excess of 75 million units world wide and boasts a game library of over 800 titles. Sony is hoping that their previous success in the gaming industry will translate into success for the PSX2.

The Lowdown:
The PSX2, priced at $299, is more than just a game console. With its current offerings, as well as those that will become available in the coming year/s, the PSX2 is better likened as an entertainment hub for one's living room.

The PSX2 today will provide the following.

  • The playing of new PSX2 DVD games.
  • The playing of all (800+) original PSX cd based games.
  • The playing of audio cds.
  • The playing of DVD movie discs.

All of that is made possible due to the innovation shown by Sony and the impressive hardware design of the PSX2.

The unit uses the 128 bit Emotion Engine(EE) CPU clocked at 300 MHz. Also included are FireWire support, 2 USB ports, and a 24x CD-ROM/4x DVD-ROM. What all that translates into is unprecedented graphic rendering capabilities, speed, and expandability. For a complete list of product specifications click here.

The Games:
With 26 titles available at launch, Sony touts the largest amount of titles available for a console launch in gaming history. Sony also enjoys outstanding third party developer support as most every player in the industry is developing games for the PSX2.

Some of the more recognizable titles currently available include Unreal Tournament, Ridge Racer V, Street FIghter EX3, and Tekken Tag Tournament. For a complete list of currently available games as well as games due out by Christmas please click here.

Peripherals:

Besides the unit itself all necessary cables and cords, as well as the DUALSHOCK 2 analog controller, accompany the unit.

The following is a list of all peripherals currently available. Sony has indicated more will follow.

DualShock 2 Analog Controller:

  • Similar in design to the original DualShock controller the new controller, with the exception of the "start" and "select" buttons is analog. Sony states that this "allows for a wider variety of user operations" and a more "compelling interactive experience". Expect to pay $34.99 for the DualShock 2.

Memory Card:

  • The new memory card costs $34.99 and has a storage capacity of 8MB. Sony claims the new card boasts data transfer rates of 250 times faster than the card used for the first Playstation.

  • The memory card will also play a part in future network applications. As such Sony has included for an authentication and encryption security system known as "MagicGate" for security purposes.

Multi Tap Adaptor:

  • The Multi Tap Adaptor(MTA) is used to increase the number of controllers and memory cards used with the PSX2. One MTA will allow for four-player gameplay and two will allow for eight player gameplay. It is not yet known whether Sony has any games available at launch that will take advantage of this peripheral. Expect to pay around $34.99 for the Multi Tap Adaptor.

Stands for the PSX2**:

  • The stands allow for the PSX2 to be displayed horizontally or vertically. The stands can be purchased for $9.99.

RF Switch**:

  • The RF Switch allows for PSX2 use through the cable connections in ones television. The RF Switch can be purchased for $9.99.

Wireless DVD Remote**:

  • The Wireless DVD Remote is self-descriptive and allows PSX2 owners to use a remote rather than a game controller to aid in viewing DVD movies. The remote sells for a price of $14.99.

NOTE: ** indicates third party product.

PSX2's Internet Capabilities:

Unlike the Sega Dreamcast, the PSX2 does not currently provide support for Internet access or the playing of games online.

In October Sony made a press release regarding their "e-distribution business". It appears that no further information regarding the internet aspects of the PSX2 will become available until 2001.

Availability:

The PSX2 will be available from most game and retail stores. Keep in mind that supply is limited to approximately 500,000 units. Most of those units have been preordered.

If you didn't happen to preorder a unit and still want one you still have a chance. Some retailers such as Circuit City did not allow for preorders and will provide PSX2 units on a first come first serve basis.

Some Things To Consider:

The price of the unit is not cheap. Priced at $299 the unit is double that of its nearest competitor.

The peripherals for the unit are also very expensive in comparison to its nearest competitor. The controller and memory card are both at least $10 more than controllers and memory cards for the Dreamcast.

No new console launch is without its problems. For example the first PSX was well known for overheating. The PSX2 launch in Japan was also not without its problems.

Good luck in your purchasing decision and Happy Gaming!
