[Interested in games, "Krafts," recipes or more HTML help? This user brings us "2 player" games, "Battleship," Yahtzee, crossword puzzles, video games, chess and more. There are many tool sites and fun pages! The crafts are for young and old alike!--ck]
You will find images, backgrounds, e-mail creations. By no means an expert and still learning, she is directly opposite of what her nic would have you believe. K will eagerly pass along the knowledge she has gained from others and from her own research. "Even if I only help one person, it is worth it because the knowledge you have is not worth having if you keep it all to yourself."
Sound reasoning from this lady who goes by the nic "Koldazice." She is neither "cold" nor made of "ice" as you will see when visiting her web site. Her friends call her "Kold" or "Ice" but I received her permission to call her "K" because the other two didn't seem to fit. K is a 30-year-old stay-at-home mom. She and her husband just celebrated their 11th anniversary this month and they have two daughters and a Rottweiler, who fill their home in Pennsylvania.
K and her husband purchased the PM Classic in March, 1999, on the recommendation of one of his friends. They had to put it on layaway at Wal-Mart, and, after getting it paid off, felt it was the best $200 they had ever spent. K loves the WebTV box and would not part with it for anything...that includes bugs and all the other problems. "Primarily, we got it for the e-mail feature so we could keep in touch with family and friends. And, it has lowered our phone bill considerably...LOL." K says she is the main user although her husband gets online at times but does not yet have a website of his own.
After sending her e-mail address to family and friends, K just surfed for a few weeks and lurked around at newsgroups to see what she could learn. Her initial newsgroups were webtv.users and homepage.opinions (HPO). "I loved these groups right away." The first chat room she visited was bored-house-wives-bored. "I was a housewife but by no means bored. Just curious. So I made some friends in there and then I found 30z-women-40z-men and they are a great bunch of people." K still visits there every once in awhile.
It was 3 to 4 months from the purchase of the box before K constructed her webpage. During this period, she was content to just surf, post in newsgroups, trace her family history, and learn. She discovered the PageBuilder and made her first page which she calls KOLD'S ZONE. "I started it purely as entertainment and a challenge to me to see what I had learned and what more I could do." The homepage grew to a website of 4 pages almost overnight. The additional 3 pages were "dynamic" in that she updates them with new material about every week. And, she provides you a way to be notified when the pages update so that you won't miss a new recipe or tip.
On her webpage, you can change the appearance of a lamp shade with Decorating and Tips, or prepare a new casserole for dinner with Recipes, and there's always some entertainment or enlightenment at Article of the Week.
She learned HTML from the sources most of us have used such as Draac and the newsgroups. For her, it has been the HPO newsgroup mentioned above. "Draac's was where I learned the basic HTML for page building and would recommend his site to anyone. But I also had lots of help from 'Expert' HTML and the HPO newsgroup and would like to give everyone in those two groups a big hug for taking time out of their very busy days to help me to see what was wrong and to fix it."
K now has 22 "Zones" (pages) in her site such as fun pages, help pages, images, and buttons she has made herself in Kold's Kreations. In addition to these, one that I found interesting was Kold's Krafts where she provides a craft project for a "grown-up" as well as one for a child. This page is also dynamic and is updated about twice a month. Since going on-line with her website, she has received over 2000 visitors.
She doesn't have any immediate plans for expanding her site because her main effort is just to keep it up-to-date. "But I have been kicking around an idea on an 'advice column'....something like Dear Abby." She states that she often gets requests for her advice on some subject or another. And, then a friend put a bug in her ear about an advice column. "I think that's down the road apiece though."
K doesn't have any dislikes about WebTV worth mentioning other than she wishes they would get the JavaScript bug fixed and solve the "page too big to view" problem. She thinks the MSN Instant Messenger is the "greatest upgrade they could have given us. It makes it easy for my family and friends to keep in touch and it is more private than the e-mail." She would like to have the ability to send a blind carbon copy in e-mail, and also the ability to have the media player work on the original Classic models.
Overall, Koldazice has a warm fuzzy feeling for her WebTV. "One of the very few things we have that provides some of the best experiences and enjoyment." K, I agree with you and feel your entertaining website goes a long way in contributing to this. Thank you for sharing it.
