4. Chat IRC FAQ by Diane Dumas

In this Special issue of Net4TV Voice I'd like to share some of the most Frequently Asked Questions I receive concerning the Chat IRC Articles I've written over the past months.

Q: How do I make my own IRC Chat for my WebTV?

A: First you need a Website (Homepage). Tripod, Geocities, and Angelfire are the most popular, but there are others like Xoom and Talk City. After you become a member, the easiest way is to transload it using Star Blvd Transloader. You can also Cut and Paste the code and use your website's editor to create a page. If you are just starting out with HTML and JavaScript, use Basic Chat 1. It is the easiest, and smallest chat. The chat is then placed on page and you give it a file name. This creates a page address (URL) you use to access the chat. When you type in the page address of the chat it will connect to the chat room. You can change the connect information to make the chat connect to different chat rooms or to your own chat room by modifying the chat code variables.

Q: I Cut and Pasted the Code but my Chat doesn't work?

A: The problem with using Cut and Paste and your Homepage's editor, is that the WebTV will add hidden spaces in your code and break the chat code line. When the code line is broken, it causes an error and the chat no longer works. Holding down the Shift and Down-Arrow key will highlight the code. Look for double spaces at the end of each line of code. If you see one, remove it.

Q: My Chat works, but won't change Chat Rooms?

A: This is caused if the file name you used to save the chat and the variable chatURL="chat.html" do NOT match. Change the "chat.html" to the same name you used as a file name (URL) to save the page on your Website (Homepage).
