Uploading got you confused? Have you got a picture on a roll of film, or have you found one on an
archive that you'd like in your web page or email? Want to move an image from one scrapbook to another?
Let Beth Candy show you how, in her complete tutorial.
If you see an image in your e-mail, you can bounce
your e-mail to see if you can get the link.
While viewing the opened e-mail,
Hit the forward button
Address the letter to yourself.
In the message area, at the very top left, write:
If you receive an (image) attachment in your WebTV
e-mail account:
When you open the e-mail, the Scrapbook
feature will appear on your left sidebar.
Click on Scrapbook
Click on "Add to your Scrapbook"
It's that easy!
If you do not see the Scrapbook feature on your left
sidebar, you either haven't activated your Scrapbook or you
haven't received an image attachment.
If you find a photo at Draac's
Click on the file name
Your image will be surrounded by black
Go directly to:Beth's Uploader
The URL (address) of the gif will automatically be
filled in for you.
Press the Upload button.
Done!
If you go to this Uploader, without first viewing the
.gif or .jpg you can just go there and type in the
URL (address) and then press the Upload button
It's that Easy!
If you see an image on a web page that you would like
to put in your Scrapbook, you must first ascertain
that you have permission to do so. If you are looking
at a free graphics site that says these are offered,
you have permission. Look to see if they have
requirements such as a link back to the site.
Sometimes they have instructions only for computer
users to download (such as "save as" and "right
click."). That means they are giving you permission
but they didn't include WebTV'ers in the instructions.
Here's an easy way to extract images from a web site
and upload them:
Go to http://www.WebScissors.com
If you go there after viewing the web site,
you can press "show last URL"
If not, type in the web site address
Press "Show Images"
You will now see all the images from that web page.
Click on whatever image you want to upload.
The image goes directly to your Scrapbook!
Here's another way you can locate, then upload image
files on a web site you have permission to copy:
The address of your image file will automatically
be written in the input box.
(You can either go to this uploader directly from the
image and take advantage of the address already being
pasted in for you, or you can erase what is in the
box and type in the address files you want to
upload.)
If you have saved a Photo in your Favorites that is
not on a web page:
Go to your Favorites Folder
Your image will be surrounded by black
Go directly to:Beth's Uploader
The URL (address) of the gif will automatically be
filled in for you.
Press the Upload button.
Done!
If you go to this Uploader, without first viewing the
.gif or .jpg you can just go there and type in the
URL (address) and then press the Upload button
It's that Easy!
2. Scroll down a little looking for the input boxes.
If you go directly to the transloader from viewing
the image, it will already be displayed in the first
box (last visited URL). You can press the water drop
underneath to make the URL drop down to the 2nd box:
Source URL. Otherwise, just type in the URL (address)
of the image you want to transload in the 2nd box:
Source URL.
3. Choose extract.
4. Press the "cmd" and "r" keys to reload the
page. (if you don't have the cmd key, use the
Windows™ logo and "r" keys.)
5. Once the page is loaded you will see the URL
(address) of the image you selected with an S
to the right of it. Choose the S next to the
URL (address) of the image you would like to save to
your scrapbook.
6. You will see this message: "You are about to
add an image to your WebTV scrapbook. Do you wish to
continue?" Press "Continue."
7. Hang around and wait for the Zap button. Press
that to log out and appease the Karma Gods.
(Do not confuse looking at an image "on" a web site
with looking at an image. When you are viewing an
image it will have a black background.)
Hit your goto key
Press the "show current" button
You will see the address of your image.
(If it ends in .html you are not looking at an image
file- you are looking at a web page that has an image
on it.)
Press the cmd and left arrow keys
(if you don't have a cmd key, use your Windows™ Logo
key).
This gets the cursor in front of the URL
Type this in:
wtv-tricks:/add-to-scrapbook?mediaPath=
Press your Return Key, then "Add to Scrapbook"
Your image is now there!
For example:
I went to Draacs Gifs and clicked on santa1.gif
I saw a photo of Santa
I pressed the "goto" and then "show current" keys
This address appeared:
http://members.tripod.com/gifs123/page18/santa1.gif
I pressed the cmd and Left arrow keys to get my
cursor in front of this address.
and typed in the code.
The address in my goto input box now looks like this:
wtv-tricks:/add-to-scrapbook?mediaPath=http://members
.tripod.com/gifs123/page18/santa1.gif
From there I pressed my Return key and then "Add to
Scrapbook" to upload Santa.
You can "cut n paste" this code:
wtv-tricks:/add-to-scrapbook?mediaPath=
And then go to a free graphic site like Draacs.
Everytime you see an image you want, press the goto
and show current buttons and then paste the code in.
This could save you a lot of time if you are going to
upload a bunch of images at one time.
If you have the negatives to a photo you have in your
hand, an easy way to get the photos online (and then
into your Scrapbook) is to use Seattle Filmworks.
Read the instructions for From a
Roll of Film. Reprints are 35˘ for 3˝x5 prints.
They offer free scanning and uploading on film they
develop/reprint.
If you do not have the negatives, you will need to
scan your hand held photos. You can not hook up a
scanner to WebTV. You will need to use a Scanning
Service.
Kinkos Copy stores wll let you use their scanners for
40˘ a minute. First time users following the
directions "taped on the wall" may take as long as 15
minutes for the first photo, 5 minutes for subsequent
use.
1) Have your mailbox cleaned out to receive photos.
2) If you are having more than 10 photos e-mailed to
you, you may have to divide them up over e-mail
accounts.
3) Ask the scanning service to send them in .jpg
format.
4) The .jpg files can be sent in one e-mail, but the
.jpg files need to remain separate- they can't be
sent in a zip file.
5) The capacity of your e-mail "INBOX" is 2 mb
(megabytes). The sender (Scanning Service) will need
that info to determine how many files they can send.
You have 2 mb "Inbox" capacity for every user name.
Note: Asking how many bytes are in the average photo
is like asking how many calories there are in a
dinner. The Scanning Service (sender) will know after
he scans your photo and before he e-mails it. He does
have the capability to reduce the size before he
sends it.
After you open the e-mail, you press "Scrapbook" and
then "Add to Scrapbook" to upload your photos.
If you have a roll of film in your fingers, here is
how you can get your photos developed and put
online:
Important note: I had to temporarily remove
the Seattle Filmworks
Instructions because they have an inadvertent
roadblock that prevents us WebTV'ers from accessing
our photos. Please call Seattle Filmworks, ask for
Tech Support and politely ask them to give you the
URL of your photos.
Looks like the next best service for WebTV'ers is Photonet.
The first thing you need to do is get the URL of the
image you want to transload "from" the Scrapbook.
Here's how you do that:
Important note:
*The scrapbook photo must be put on a web page. Just
make a page called "photos" and move the photo(s) to
it. *
Okay, go to that photo
From your homepage
Click on Community (top)
Click on Pagebuilder (top)
Click on Scrapbook (on the left)
Click on the photo of choice
See the photo name on bottom left?
It "might" be importD0_gif
(btw, that's a D"Zero", not D, letter O)
It "might" be named MailedD3_jpg or
importD6_jpg
"whatever" it is named:
"mentally" remove the underscore_ and put dot .
importD0.gif is the new file name
(or mailD3.jpg , etc)
If it is PostedD7 add .jpg to make PostedD7.jpg
We will add the file name importD0.gif to this:
http://community-1.webtv.net/userName/pagetitle/scrap
bookFiles/
The userName will be replaced with yours
The pagetitle will be replaced with yours (photos?)
Okay, so we add:
importD0.gif (or whatever you came up with) to this:
http://community-1.webtv.net/userName/pagetitle/scrap
bookFiles/importD0.gif
That is how you get the URL of the file you want to
transload.
Here is how you transload it:
First go to:
http://transload.starblvd.net/
Scroll down a little.
You will see a bunch of input boxes.
The first one is filled in for you. They tell you the
URL (address) of the last place you were at. Clever,
but not necessary. (If you went directly to Star Blvd
from the file you want to transload, then you can
click on the teardrop to bring the file down into the
next box.)
Last Visited URL:(A) news:webtv.users.
The next box is:
Source URL:(R)
That is where you type in the address of a file you
want to transload. For example:
Source
URL:(R)http://community-1.webtv.net/AngryYoungMan/mem
berprofile/scrapbookFiles/importD0.jpg
Now that it will soon be on your web site, what do
you want to call it? Put the new name in the box:
Rename to:(O) steve.jpg
Sidenote: If the file you are transloading ended with
".jpg" rename your new file ending with .jpg
Next you fill out the FTP server. You can click on
the question mark for help, but FTP servers I know
are:
Angelfire: ftp.angelfire.com
CrossWinds: ftp.crosswinds.net
FortuneCity: ftp.fortunecity.com
FreeSpeech: ftp.freespeech.org
GeoCities: ftp.geocities.com
GeoCities/Japan: ftp.geocities.co.jp
NetTaxi: ftp.nettaxi.com
PhotoPoint: ftp.photopoint.com
TalkCity: home.talkcity.com
TheGlobe: ftp.theglobe.com
Tripod: ftp.tripod.com
WebJump: ftp.webjump.com
Xoom: ftp.xoom.com
InternetTrash: ftp.internettrash.com
So if you are at geocities, you would write:
Target FTP Server:(R) ftp.geocities.com
Now you would write in your geocities account name
(or tripod name, etc.)
Target Account Name:(R) bethsplace
Next you fill in your geocities (or tripod, etc)
password:
Target Account Password:(R) *******
Almost done! Notice the R's up above? That is
"Required" info. All the rest of the boxes have O's
for "Optional." We can ignore them today.
Ignore:
Upload Directory:(O)
Transload in ASCII Mode:For plain text files such as
HTML.(O)
Direct to Editor:Lets you edit HTML files on-line.(O)
Direct to ImageTool:Gives image infos and type
conversions.(O)
Expand Characters:Uses GIFs as your character
fonts.(O)
Clip Guestbook Entry:
Now all you need to do is push the "TRANSLOAD"
button.
Then they ask you to hang out, follow the progress
and when you get the "all okay" message, they kindly
request you to hit the "ZAP" button to appease the
Karma Gods.
To recap, all you need to fillout is:
Source
URL:(R)http://community-1.webtv.net/AngryYoungMan/mem
berprofile/scrapbookFiles/importD0.jpg
Rename To:(O) steve.jpg
Target FTP Server:(R) ftp.geocities.com
Target Account Name:(R) bethsplace
Target Account Password:(R) *******
And then push "Transload" button
The Scrapbook is your File Manager. Currently the
only files you can upload to your Scrapbook are image files.
The only way to have sound play on your Page Builder
site is to link to it.
WebTV users have two ways to put sound in their
Page Builders .
The first thing you need is the URL (address) of a
sound file.
I went to:
http://www.geocities.com/webtvbeth/halloween/index.html
and selected this sound file:
http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound25.mid
The first way to put sound in your e-mail is to use
the Microsoft tag:
<bgsound
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid">
All I did was put the file name inside of this
tag:
<bgsound src="URL">
When your e-mail is received, this song ( Reaper )
will automatically play. If you want
the file to play over and over, add this attribute
inside the tag: loop="infinite"
<bgsound
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" loop="infinite">
Also, you can change the infinite to a number, such
as "2" for it to play 2 times.
The 2nd way is to use the Netscape tag,
<embed src="URL">
When I put the of the URL (address) of the sound
file, it looks like this:
<embed
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid">
As this is written (above) the sound file will not
automaticaly play. A speaker image will show for the
receiver to click on.
You can, however, use this tag to automatically play
by adding the attribute: autostart="true"
<embed src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" autostart="true">
And if you want the sound to play over and over
again, add this attribute: loop="true"
<embed
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" autostart="true" loop="true">
Why do Netscape and Microsoft use different html
commands for sound? Well, because they want you to
select their Browser. Computer users must select a
browser and can only hear the compatible sound file.
Aren't we lucky that we can hear either?
If you want to consider your computer friends, you
can use "both" tags!
First use the embed tag:
<embed
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" autostart="true" loop="true">
Your Netscape friends browser will see this tag and
play it. Now you will write:
<noembed>
I guess you figured out that the above tag means "for
the browser who can't see embed tags."
So, write the bgsound tag after the
<noembed>
<embed
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" autostart="true" loop="true">
<noembed>
<bgsound
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" loop="infinite">
The noembed tag has a closing tag to tell the browser
it's done:
</noembed>
Here is the whole ball of wax:
<embed
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" autostart="true" loop="true">
<noembed>
<bgsound
src="http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/candy/images/sound2
5.mid" loop="infinite">
</noembed>
Common errors in writing this stuff is not using the
quotes or only using one quote. Another error is a
typo. To troubleshoot you can break down the areas
into checking the sound file, and then checking the
tags. You can write perfect code, but if the URL is
incorrect, it will never play. Sometimes I just erase
and start from scratch.
Paul's conscience wants me to remind you when
selecting sound files, to only use one from a web
site that gives you permission to link. Read more
about bandwidth theft here:
http://www.geocities.com/~by2000/badlinking.html
Here's how to get the URL of a photo in our scrapbook
and also how to link to it.
Important note:
The scrapbook image must be published on a page.
Create a page titled photos and add the image to it.
If you want to link to every scrapbook page of
images, you may want to create a Page Builder page
for each Scrapbook page and title them
photos1, then photos2, etc.
Important note #2:
When you read these instructions, it appears that the
URLs (addresses) end on one line and begin on
another. When you type out a URL (address), you would
never use your space bar or return key. Keep typing
and allow WebTV to wrap around to the next line.
Okay, go to that photo
From your homepage
Click on Community (top)
Click on Pagebuilder (top)
Click on Scrapbook (on the left)
Click on the photo of choice
See the photo name on bottom left?
It "might" be importD0_gif
(btw, that's a D"Zero", not D, letter O)
It "might" be named mailD3_jpg
or importD6_jpg - whatever it is named:
We will add it (example:importD0_gif) to this:
http://community.webtv.net/userName/photos/scrapbookF
iles/
To make this:
http://community.webtv.net/userName/photos/scrapbookF
iles/filename
The userName will be replaced with yours
If you did not name your page "photos", take out the
word "photos" and replace with the title of your page
Remove the word "filename" and replace with the
actual filename (examples were written above)
It may now look like this:
http://community.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/photos2/scra
pbookFiles/importD0_gif
The last step is to remove the underscore _ in the
filename and replace with a dot .
Final outcome might look like this:
http://community.webtv.net/SecretAdmirer/photos2/scra
pbookFiles/importD0.gif
Now you know how to get the URL!
Here's how to link to it in your e-mail:
Go in your mailbox
Click on settings (on left)
Click on signature
Type this in the rectangular box:
Click on "done" (very important)
HTML is the language we are talking is the code
You remove the three letters URL and replace with the
actual URL (address) of your image.
means you are done talking in
html.
One last note. One typo and it's crying time. These
files are case sensitive. See how there is one
capital letter in scrapbookFiles? Follow the upper or
lower case exactly.
Your image(s) must be on a published page.
Switch users to the one you want the images in.
Go to:http://www.WebScissors.com
Type in the web site address
Press "Show Images"
Click on any image and WebScissors will place it in
your Scrapbook for you.
Go to http://www.WebScissors.com
Type in your web site address.
Press "Show Images."
Click on your vidcap (video-captured) image.
WebScissors will place it in your Scrapbook.
