Net4TV Plans Online Eclipse Event

By Net4TV Voice
(August 1, 1999)

Can't be in Europe for the last total solar eclipse of the century? Experience it online as it happens, with chat, live webcams, and live audio discussion with our special Net4TV correspondent in Stuttgart, Germany!

The eclipse will occur over Stuttgart shortly after noon on Wednesday, August 11. For those of us on this side of the Atlantic, that's the wee hours of the morning -- about 6:00 am EDT/3:00 am PDT. There are quite a lot of online events planned for the eclipse, and we're hosting a special one, too. for our Net4TV community.

Net4TV Schedule

Tuesday, August 10
11:30 pm EDT/8:30 pm PDT

Chatroom opens in the Net4TV channel on www.chat4tv.com. A special chat interface for WebTV and PC users will be available from the Chat Event Page.

Wednesday, August 11
3:00 am EDT/12:00 am PDT

RealAudio music begins. The special chat interfaces will have links to turn on the audio feed. Webcams will be available as they come online from Europe. 60 audio streams are available.

5:00 am EDT/2:00 am PDT
Live talk show begins. Our hosts in US will connect with our correspondent in Germany for a live description of the event. Our hosts are also in the chatroom, and can pass your questions and comments to our correspondent. Totality is from about 3:32 to 3:35 PDT!

7:00 am EDT/4:00 am PDT
Show concludes. Audio archives of the event and webcam snaps will be available later on the Eclipse Event Page.

Mark your calendar! Set your clock! We'll see you there!

Net4TV will be combining a chat event with a RealAudio "net radio" show, broadcast live during the chat from our Net4TV studio, and webcams of the eclipse broadcast live from Europe. The event involves the approach that Net4TV's Chat4TV uses every Sunday to combine a live "radio style" talk show and webcams with IRC chat. Special event interfaces for both WebTV and PCs will combine the chat, webcams, and audio feed into a single multimedia experience.

"It's an especially exciting happening for me," said Knut Eichhorn, co-producer of the Net4TV Eclipse Event. "Since I was in the US this summer, I expected to miss the eclipse. But after I saw how Chat4TV already combines chat, audio, and webcam every Sunday, I realized that we could use this to create an event that lots of us could share!"

Knut's sister will be Net4TV's correspondent in Stuttgart, and will be connected by phone to the Net4TV studio during the event. "We'll all be able to see the webcams," says Knut, "but it adds so much more to have a live commentary from someone who is actually there!" You can read more about Knut and how the event came about in our feature, The Red Baron Brings The Sun.

Many other sites will also be providing eclipse events, and our Eclipse Excitement Surfari can take you to a number of them that are WebTV friendly. You can also find out more about what goes on during a total solar eclipse in our special feature, Total Eclipse: How It Happens.

Special Event Page

All of these stories, the link to the chat interfaces, and any other event information that becomes available can also be found on our main entrance page to the Eclipse '99: The Online Experience. After the event, the main page also will provide access to the audio archives, webcam pictures, and interesting portions of the chat transcript.
