Sticky Keyboards

By Net4TV Voice Readers
(April 23, 2000)

Those pesky sticky keyboards... they generate frustration, and mail.

This worked! My keyboard was DEAD due to major spill accident. I priced new ones, best price $30. Was thinking og just buying a new computer, but did not want to give up webtv - so easy! My boyfriend followed your wonderful directions and it still did not work- intially. Because he's patient and not a quitter, he retraced his steps and there were still wet spots. He dried thm off again ( also, he used a hairdryer on low and cleaned parts with rubbing alcohol. He figured What the heck - it can't get worse.

Eureka! It now works Great! Can't thank you enough. This site should be posted on web tv message boards monthly.

Thanks again from a happy webbie.

Meow for now,

Does the writer of the sticky keyboard article answer questions and if so can he tell me what is wrong, after following his step by step procedure, when the number one, two, three and four keys won't work when all the other keys do???

These keys worked fine before.

Thanks,

Dan

Dan,

The sticky keyboard cleaning process I described is a method of last resort. It is a good option if your only other option is to buy a new keyboard. It doesn't always work, which is why we put a disclaimer on the article.

That being said, there may be a few reasons why your keys don't work. It's possible that the plastic sheets weren't aligned properly and aren't making good contact.

It's possible the parts inside weren't perfectly dry and water may have been trapped inside.

It's also possible that the cleaning process damaged the computer chip, but I doubt that, since the other keys appear to work.

Depending on how you feel about spending more time on what might be a lost cause, you might consider taking the keyboard apart again, doublecheck the parts and put it back together again.

Wish I could offer more on this.

Good luck!

I note the information items from WEBTV users abouit how to clean keyboards when the keys get sticky.

What a complicated procedure. Unless you have much time to waste, it makes more sense to buy a new keybord.

BUT THERE IS A SIMPLER WAY !

The repair guy in my local computer store recommended trying the dishwasher ! Just put in in an otherwise empty dishewasher with a little detergent on a gentle wash cycle. Perhaps cut the dry cycle short so the keyboard does not see too much heat, but otherwise just a regular wash in a dishwasher.

Wow ! But I had already decided to order a new keyboard, so why not give it a try ? I had little to lose and I might get a spare I could give to my daughter.

IT WORKED FINE ! Of course, remove the batteries first, and expect to wait for at least 3 or 4 days for the last of the moisture to evaporate. True, it did not work when just after removal from the disheasher, but after 4 days, great.

Try it - it is better than just throwing ;it out.

By the way, if you do get sticky keys with a Sony keyboard, buy a Magnavox. Fully interchangeable, and Marnavox puts a clear varnish ( Krylon ) over the white decal print letters on the keys. On the Sony, the letters are not so protected, and after 6 months of typing, over half of the letters on the keyboard were gone. Sony would not sel a replacement key set ( probably not profitable enough - a few dollars is all that it would cost ) and buying a new Sony produced a unit tht was just the same, blank keys in 4 months..

Magnavox keyboards, with same typing level, have lasted years.

Of course, the best solution is to used a wired keyboard with the original classic, or with the adapter from OMDEV. ( Computer keyboards have molded-in letters. ) The new Sony 250 keyboard with its brighter and wider projecting IR display can bring the reliability of typing that is not possible with the original wireless keyboards.

John,

LOL! Yes, I heard of the old dishwasher trick! I'm glad it worked for you. I tried it in my dishwasher and had no luck. Perhaps I left it in the dry cycle too long or I didn't let it dry 4-5 days. Mine was dead when I finished putting it through the washer. I wonder if the clothes washer would work.... LOL!

I agree, the OMDEV wired keyboard adapter is a great little contraption. I have one myself. It's so nice to have a full keyboard under my fingers. The editors of Net4TV Voice liked it so much we decided to give it our Editor's Choice Award.

Thanks for writing!
