What information do I need to give someone e-mailing me images?
- Your e-mail inbox storage capacity is 2 megabytes.
- Files sent to you must be under 200,000 bytes.
- Files should not be zipped.
- Photographs should be sent in JPEG format, be under 200,000 bytes, using 50% compression.
- Graphics should be sent in GIF format, under 200,000 bytes, and as a 16-color file.
- It is preferable to send one image per e-mail.
- When selecting the size of a scanned photograph, keep in mind that the WebTV screen size is approximately 544x372 pixels (a computer screen is often set at a larger 640x480 pixels or 1024x768 pixels). A photograph scanned at 272x186 pixels would take up 1/2 of your WebTV screen.
Note: Asking how many bytes are in the average photo is like asking how many calories there are in a dinner. The variables are numerous. The Scanning Service (sender) will know after he scans your photograph and before he e-mails it. He does have the capability to reduce the size before he sends it.

How do I open a zip file?
One service that opens a zip file is TL2. There is a charge for this service, but they have a free 3 day trial.
How do I center the photograph on my page?
The reason your photograph is not centered is because the Page Builder has it inside of a table and that table is using align="left" or align="right."
You can change the background style of your page to one that will center your image for you. To change the background style:
- While in edit
- Click on "change page style" (on top right)
- Select: BlueSands, RingBinder, Ocean, Cats, Tan, Christmas, Channukah, Halloween, Democratic, Republican, Wedding, NewWave, Eyeballs, American, SouthBeach, Paisley, Water or Marble.
- Press "Publish" (on left sidebar)
If you do not want to change background page styles you can still center your image:
- Go to your Page Builder Index
- Click on your page
- Select "Change page"
- Click on "Add an item"
- Select "Text"
- In the large rectangle box, type:
<table border="0" width="100%"><tr><td align="center">
<img src="URL"><td></tr></table>

How do I get my images side by side?
- Go to your Page Builder Index
- Click on your page
- Select "Change page"
- Click on "Add an item"
- Select "Text"
- In the large rectangle box, type:
<table border="0" width="100%" > <tr> <td align="center">
<img src="URL"> </td>
<td align="center">
<img src="URL"> </td>
</tr> </table>
Remove the URL (but leave the quotes) and replace with the actual URLs (addresses) of your scrapbook image.
- Press the "Done" button

crying time. These files are case sensitive. There is one capital letter in scrapbookFiles. Follow
the upper or lower case exactly.
When I tried to send an image from my scrapbook, I got this error message: "This page cannot be sent
because it is part of WebTV."
This error is poorly worded. It should say that it cannot be sent because it is protected behind a security firewall.
You can place a copy of your scrapbook image into a subdirectory and link to that. That is having the best of both worlds. Your original will remain protected and you can still link. You place a copy of your scrapbook image into a subdirectory by publishing it on a web page.

How do I get a thumbnail image of my page showing on my Public List of pages?
Your public list of pages is located:
http://community.webtv.net/username
Remove the word "username" and replace with your actual username.
Some Plus model WebTV Users have thumbnail images of their pages.
The images are created when the Plus Users used the Preview feature.
Classic users have no way of creating these images in their Public Listing.
How do I control the image you will see when you save my page in your favorites?
The thumbail you see that represents a page in Favorites is a logo. The logo is a WebTV only tag and can only be seen by WebTVers.
To put a logo on your page:
- Go to your Page Builder Index.
- Click on your Page
- Click on "Change page"
- Click on "Add an item"
- Select "Text"

How many photos can I fit in my scrapbook?
The largest photo will take up approximately 7% of your storage space. You could use up all your Scrapbook storage with as little as 14 photographs. This is unlikely.
With a large variety of graphics you could probably fit over 100 images into your Scrapbook.
How do I know how much space I've used or how much I have left in my scrapbook?
- Go to your
Page Builder Index
- Click on "Clean up" (on left sidebar)
- At the very top you will see what percentage your
documents are taking up of your storage space.
- Click on "Scrapbook"
- Again, at the top you will see what percentage of
storage is being used.
- Combine the two percentages.
- Minus that from 100% to see what, if any storage you have left.
For example, if your documents are taking up 5% of your storage and your scrapbook is consuming 57% of your storage, the total used storage is 62%. Minus that from 100% means that you have 38% of your storage left.
- The maximum file size you can upload is 200,000 bytes. This would take up approximately 7% of your allotted storage. You wouldn't be able to upload a large image if your scrapbook capacity was over 93%.
How can I transload to my Scrapbook?
We cannot Transload to the WebTV Scrapbook. We can only Upload. Please refer to All I know About Uploading.
How can I upload to my Scrapbook?
Please refer to All I know About Uploading.
What is the difference between upload and transload?
Transload and Upload are the same thing. They both copy files. They just take different paths. Page Builders use Uploaders and non WebTV hosts (like Geocities, Tripod, Angelfire) use Transloaders.
When I tried to transload a scrapbook image, I got
the error message "Message: More than likely, the
site is blocking for its own copyright protection.
Download Error: The file does not exist or is
truncated, abort transload."
I have seen this error only when the wrong URL was given. Doublecheck that you have the correct URL entered.
Sometimes the image dissapears in my e-mail.
Remove the dash and number after the word community when you are linking from your e-mail.
If your URL starts with:
http://community-2.webtv.net/
Use:
http://community.webtv.net/
I just noticed a "Scrapbook" on the side bar so I
saved pictures. Now where is the scrapbook?
That word "Scrapbook" on your e-mail sidebar is the Scrapbook "upload" feature. It appears whenever you receive an image attachment in your e-mail. All it does is upload to the scrapbook.
To get to your scrapbook:
-
From your homepage (or start page. The first screen you see after you select a user name when you sign on)
-
Click on "Community"
-
Select "Page Builder"
-
Click on "Scrapbook" (on left sidebar)
If you create a page for your images from your Scrapbook, can you safely clean up (remove images from) your scrapbook to make more room?
The pictures are not on your pages. The pictures remain in your scrapbook. What you put on your pages is a "link" to your scrapbook images.
Think of a link as a mirror reflection. If the object is removed, the reflection would be empty.
The amount of room that your original photo takes up in your scrapbook is measured and used against your total allottment. But the links don't. Links take up a barely measurable amount of room. (Only the text used to make the link is counted.)
Let's go back to the mirror reflection metaphor. The person in the mirror weighs 120 pounds. The reflection weighs zero. If you remove the person (your scrapbook image), you will not be able to see its reflection (the link on your page).
And remember that the link weighs zero and is not taking up any room anyway.
You get 3 megabytes of space for every user account. If your scrapbook is full, you can use the scrapbook in another account and link to those images. You can create up to 5 other user accounts.
Meanwhile, if you have tried to delete a scrapbook image you would have seen a wonderful security alert stating that you are unable to delete this image because it is published on a page. You would have to remove the link from the page first and then go in to delete the image.
If a delete an image that I have elsewhere, will it still be in my scrapbook?
When you upload an image to your Scrapbook, you are placing a copy of an image in this storage area. It is not linked to or affected by other images- not even the original.
The Scrapbook upload feature is not in my sidebar.
Before you can use it, you must activate your scrapbook. You need to go to your PageBuilder, accept the agreement and make a "dummy" page.
Here's how:
-
Go to your home page
-
Click on community
-
Click on Page Builder
-
You will see an introductory message
-
Click on "Continue"
-
You will see the license agreement
-
Click on "I accept" (at bottom)
-
Click on the page style "Blue Sands"
-
Click on "Add an item"
-
Select "Text"
-
write hello in the large box (or something)
-
Click on "Done"
-
Click on Publish (on left sidebar)
-
Click on the "Continue" button
-
Click on "Publish"
-
Click on "Done"
Voila!!! You now have the scrapbook privelege! See it on the
left?
Now, if you:
-
Click on "Index" (on left sidebar)
-
Click on your "no title" published page
-
Click on "Discard page"
-
Confirm Discard
You have rid yourself of the test page
and retained your Scrapbook-ability.
Although I got the "Successful" confirmation after
uploading a photograph, when I went to my scrapbook, only
half of my photograph was there.
Only the first 200,000 bytes of an image will make it to the scrapbook. Sounds like your photo was over the size limit.
If this is not the case, try uploading the image again. Maybe it just went through a bad connection?
If this is the case, then you will need to reduce the image before you can upload it. The optimal situation would be the sender reducing the image and re-sending it.
I can't delete an image from my scrapbook. I get a
popup that says I cannot delete the image because it
is being used on a page. It is not because I deleted
the page!
If you have recently deleted the page, it probably is not deleted from the server. You will have to wait for maintenance to remove your discarded page.
I received three e-mails with
pictures,The first e-mail picture loaded
into my scrapbook the second e-mail did
not, I went to the third e-mail picture it
loaded into my scrapbook. Why does
the one e-mail picture refuse to go to my
scrapbook?
My guess is that the 2nd photo is over the 200,000
byte size limit.
Can it be resent? You would need the sender to send
it in .jpg format and under the 200,000 byte maximum
size per picture.
If not, here is how you can reduce it and send it to
yourself:
- First, you must open a free e-mail account at:
http://www.HugKiss.com
- Forward the e-mail to your HugKiss e-mail account
- Go to your HugKiss account and open the e-mail
- The image is now an attachment
- At the top of your e-mail you will see the name
of you attachment. * Take note if it ends in .jpg or
.gif (example: donut.gif)
- Click on "download attachment"
- Press your goto key
- Press the "Show Last" button
- Press and hold the cmd key
(or that Windows™ logo key)
- Press the A key to highlight the address
- Press the C key to copy the address
- Immediately Goto WebFX:
- Erase the address inside the box
- Paste the copy of your address in by:
Pressing and holding the cmd key
(or that Windows™ logo key)
Press the V key to paste the address
- You will need to add either .jpg or .gif to this
address (what you saw in your HugKiss e-mail example:
donut.gif , you would then add .gif)
- Click on "apply effect" (on bottom right)
- Click on "mail this picture" (very bottom)
- Address the form to yourself and click "send this
pic"
- Inside your WebTV mailbox, open the e-mail
- You will see the Scrapbook feature in your left
sidebar
- Click on "Scrapbook"
- Click on "Add to Scrapbook"
- Mission Complete
I got this error message "A problem prevented
saving any of the images to your scrapbook."
My guess is that the image is over the 200,000 byte size limit or that it has an illegal character in the file name.
If the sender could reduce the image or change the file name (to something simple with only letters) and resend it, the problem might be resolved.
Otherwise, here is how you can resend a reduced, renamed version to yourself:
- First, you must open a free e-mail account at:
http://www.HugKiss.com
- Forward the e-mail to your HugKiss e-mail account
- Go to your HugKiss account and open the e-mail
- The image is now an attachment
- At the top of your e-mail you will see the name of you attachment. Take note if it ends in .jpg or .gif (example: donut.gif)
- Click on "download attachment"
- Press your goto key
- Press the "Show Last" button
- Press and hold the cmd key
- (Classic users press Windows™ logo key)
- Press the A key to highlight the address
- Press the C key to copy the address
- Immediately Goto WebFX:
- Erase the address inside the box
- Paste the copy of your address in by:
- Pressing and holding the cmd key
(Classic users press the Windows™ logo key)
- Press the V key to paste the address
You will need to add either .jpg or .gif to this address (what you saw in your HugKiss e-mail example: donut.gif , you would then add .gif)
- Click on "apply effect" (on bottom right)
- Click on "mail this picture" (very bottom)
- Address the form to yourself and click "send this pic"
- Inside your WebTV mailbox, open the e-mail
- You will see the Scrapbook feature in your left sidebar
- Click on "Scrapbook"
- Click on "Add to Scrapbook"
Help! I have two different images with the same
name! They are both importD0.gif
File names are case sensitive. If you look at your image name again, you will see one is importD0.gif and the other is importD0.GIF
At an Image Tool, I got this error message "Your filename contains prohibited characters."
When pasting in your URL you may have inadvertently pasted in an invisible space. An invisible space is a prohibited character. Instead of pasting in your URL type it in.
I got the error message "WebTV ran into a
technical problem. Please try again."
First, let me explain error messages. Authors write
the error messages. Authors write
programs like this:
if they do this, we'll do this
if they do that, we'll do that
Sometimes authors cannot figure everything that you
will try to do. They build a program to be used
following the directions and they test it. They
notice a pattern of common errors, but they don't
catch them all.
What does that mean? It means they try to write
pertinent error codes such as "you must fill in your
area code" but they can't figure out all the errors
you will make so they lump it all together like this:
if they do this, we do this
if they do that, we say this
if they try X, we say X:
if they try Y, we say Y:
if they do "all else" we just make one blanket
statement and try to cover it with a general "webtv
ran into technical difficulties. try again."
Okay, are you following me? The error message "webtv
ran into technical difficulties. please try again."
is not a specific statement for your problem. It's
one of those "if any error occurs that we didn't
cover, let's tell them this."
More than likely, WebTV has not run into technical
difficulties when you tried to upload an image. More
than likely you used the uploader incorrectly.
The most common error I have run across happens when
trying to upload a web page. We can not upload pages
to our Scrapbooks. We can only upload images. If the
file name ends in .htm or .html it is a web page. It
may very well appear to be an image, but it is an
image on a web page, not an image. An image file ends
with .gif or .jpg
Ooooh! You are saying! Now what to do?
No problem. Take the page to
WebScissors. WebScissors
will extract the images off a web page and show them
to you. From there, you can click on the image and
WebScissors will place the desired image in your
Scrapbook for you.
When I try to go to my Scrapbook image I get the error message: "The Publisher refuses to give you access."
This is a false error message. You probably are getting this error during WebTV's maintenance. This error resolves itself usually within minutes, so just wait a little while and try again.
