How to Create at Tripod

Part 3: Tripod's Quickpage Editor

Tripod's Quickpage editor is the best I've seen on the Net. It is the easiest to use, the easiest to understand and after you learn the tricks you'll be able to create entire websites with just the Quickpage editor. In the Tripodisms section of this segment of Net4TV I will let you in on the secrets of several different aspects of the Tripod homepage builder including making full use of the Quickpage editor, but first lets talk about The Quickpage editor itself.

The Quickpage editor can be accessed through your "Housekeeper" homepage. Just look on the top left-hand side of your "Housekeeper" page and click on "Quickpage builder". The first thing you'll have to do is choose a file name. ALWAYS name the first page of your site "index.html" The reason I say this is that when you enter a URL to go to on your browser it automatically looks for the index page as the first. If you would not have a page set up at the index.html address you would see an index of what is at that address. Now I dont know about you but I dont want people to look at what I have in the index to my site. Its not that I have anything personal there per se but sometimes I may have a work in progress that I do not want to be viewed publicly. If it is hidden then no one can see it, if they see your index then nothing can be hidden.

Once you have selected "index.html" as the name for your first page, you then have to select the layout of the page you wish to build. Layout 1 is pretty common. It is good for adding long lists of links. Layout 2 makes use of a sidebar, like the layout of this page. I recommend trying both styles and see which one looks best to you.

Now we have the file name and the layout chosen. The next thing we have to do is name the page. You can name it whatever you wish. Tripod has default settings used in their Quickpage editor. An example would be: If your member name was "JohnnyNetSurfer" and you chose to edit the title of the page you're creating it would show a window that would say "JohnnyNetSurfer's page!" Now this is where that edit key comes to good use. highlight that window and push the edit key and change that to whatever you wish!

After the name has been set you then have to set your color scheme. This is very easy to do. Just click on Pick the color scheme and then you'll be able to select the color of the background, text color, links, and visited links. These are preset unfortunately, but not to worry, In the Quickpageisms section of the Tripodisms segment I'll show you how to put in whatever color scheme you wish. For right now though, just pick one from the choices listed.

Now its on to the links, text, images, and the rest! There are five different sections in the Quickpage editor. A section will look like this:

Section 1

This section is currently

empty

What would you like for this section to contain?

An Image
A List of Links
A Block of Text
A Page-Hit Counter
Your Contact Information

All you have to do is decide what you want in the section you have chosen to edit. Say that you wanted to put an image in the first section. All you have to do is click on "An Image" and then it will give you the option of uploading an image, or using an image on the web.

What image do I use?

First piece of advice here is: Think before you link. If you link to a site that charges there customers for bandwidth, that person will have to pay for the image going to your page. This has caused many problems for many people. Draac is a good example. Tripod shut down several pages of Draacs' images because people were putting them in their e-mails and using them on sites other than Tripod. This costs Tripod, and the only thing they could do was shut it down. If you need an image, the best thing is to ask a computer-using friend to upload it to your directory or you can go to Kinko's and use one of their computers to upload it yourself. The point is, The best way to get an image is out of your own directory. Find one on the net you like and get it uploaded.

I would recommend choosing an image that has to do with the topic of your page. It would'nt make much sense to have a page about your pet dog and have a picture of a nuclear explosion would it? If you find a picture that is on the net that is on topic with your page, ask them if you can use it. If they say yes then find the URL of that image and enter in that URL where it asks you to "Enter the URL of any image on the web". You will have to enter in the complete URL using "http://". If you dont enter in http:// it will not work.

Links

Adding links in your Page cannot be simpler. When you choose to make a section of links the first thing I would reccomend is just writing them all down in your legal pad or whatever you use to keep track of all this stuff. Just visit the site that you wish to link to and push your "info" key and write down the complete address of that page. Also in the Quickpage editor it will ask you for a breif description of the site and the name of the site. Once you get all of this information down, go to the Section you wish to add the links to and just simply fill in the boxes with the infor mation you have on paper.

Text

Adding text is also very simple in this editor. All you have to do is decide the header or topic of the page if you want it listed and then write the text you wish to use. You can choose to center the text and you can also "funkify" the header. What this means is that it will change the colors and sizes of the characters used in the header. It gives it an interesting look.

Counter?

The counter on the other hand does not work. I dont know why, I dont know how to fix it, all I know is that I tried everything to make mine work and it never did. I have never seen one that did work. I can recommend getting a free counter from somewhere on the web. Just go to your search engine and search for "hit counters" and you should get some good results.

Your contact information

When putting in your contact information, it will show you a list of things you can put in including your name, e-mail address, postal address, and so forth. If you wish for something to not be listed, just erase that line. Also if you wish for something else to be added you can just put it in one of the blank boxes.

That really about wraps it up for the Quickpage editor other than what I have in the Quickpageisms section. I hope that your editing is worry free and enjoyable.
